Quite recently President Obama has declared the legality of same-sex marriages in the United States. I'm sure many have opinions about his actions. As for me, I try not to concern myself with politics and society but I still have my views on this controversial, yet simple issue. I will say that I DO support gay marriage and my reasons for this are neither social nor political. As for now, I'm not writing about why I think this to be so, but merely stating a point that I believe others should observe.
A marriage between two people occurs because these two individuals have found love and desire to spend the rest of their life with each other. Ultimately, the basis for their union is love; Love it is, not money, not politics, and certainly not religion. It seems that society and religion have been discriminating and harsh towards gay marriage because of the implications it has on the "sanctity of marriage" and a somewhat unnatural union between two humans. Firstly, I'll say that the sanctity of marriage is only 'defiled' if and only if the union is broken (i.e. divorce or adultery). But here we are talking of unions, not separations, are we not? So how could the sanctity of marriage be destroyed when two people come together to be made as one? Gender does not have an influence on marriage, only Love, which leads to marriage.
Furthermore, many people (even the non-religious) might consider same-sex marriages as being unnatural. Seriously?! What is natural in the first place? And what do they mean by "natural"? A definition of "natural" could be opposite polarities in nature itself - e.g. light and dark; yin and yang; and male and female. True indeed. But this does not prove anything about a gay couple getting married being unnatural, nor even about a man and woman getting married being natural. Therefore, if the answer does not lie in nature, it must apparently lie with man. So what is natural to man? Nothing! Man has shaped the way he views the world according to his own preferences and it is only his conditioning and sortal concepts (philosophical term) that acts as a filter between the "natural" and "unnatural". It is just unfortunate that man has conditioned himself to think that gay marriage is unnatural. Thus, there can be nothing "unnatural" nor even "natural" about gay marriage. Gay marriage just is.

Finally, setting these arguments apart for now, there is one point to be made about this issue. It was mentioned that people get married out of love. And whether these people are straight or gay couples, it does not matter. Love between two people is something personal. And if two people love each other, then leave them the fuck alone!!
